Background of the Study

Physical activity plays a significant role in maintaining the health and well-being of elderly individuals. It has been shown to reduce the risk of chronic conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and arthritis, while also improving mental health by reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety (Obi et al., 2023). However, many elderly individuals in Taraba State, like in other regions, are insufficiently active due to factors such as limited mobility, health concerns, and lack of awareness of the benefits of exercise.

In Taraba State, where the elderly population is growing, it is crucial to assess how physical activity levels impact the health of older adults. This study will evaluate the physical activity levels of elderly individuals and explore the relationship between these levels and various health outcomes, including physical and mental health.

Statement of the Problem

Many elderly individuals in Taraba State may not engage in sufficient physical activity, potentially contributing to the higher prevalence of chronic diseases and decreased quality of life. Barriers to physical activity include health-related issues, inadequate facilities, and lack of education on the benefits of exercise. This study will assess the physical activity levels of elderly individuals in Taraba State and examine the impact of these levels on their health.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the physical activity levels of elderly individuals in Taraba State.

  2. To determine the impact of physical activity on the health of elderly individuals in Taraba State.

  3. To recommend strategies for improving physical activity levels among elderly individuals in Taraba State.

Research Questions

  1. What are the physical activity levels of elderly individuals in Taraba State?

  2. How does physical activity impact the health of elderly individuals in Taraba State?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to encourage physical activity among elderly individuals in Taraba State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Physical activity levels among elderly individuals in Taraba State are lower than recommended levels for maintaining health.

  2. Physical activity positively impacts the health of elderly individuals, reducing the incidence of chronic diseases.

  3. Interventions aimed at increasing physical activity will improve the physical and mental health of elderly individuals in Taraba State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on elderly individuals living in both rural and urban areas of Taraba State. Limitations include challenges in accurately measuring physical activity levels and the possibility of self-reporting bias.

Definitions of Terms
